From: John (Wed Apr 27 20:51:31 2005) I work at a nuclear plant so i am knowledgable of how much acute radiation a person can handle if a person actually took any of these pictures i know for a fact they are dead, it only takes a couple minutes of exposure to fuel for you to die, its not a quick death, it take generally 2 months, you lose your hair, then your teeth, then death. If i were exposed to that much radiation i would kill myself, it would be less painfull. |

At least there was a documentary where they took these actual fotos with the help of robots when searching for the missing fuel. It was said on the film that they spotted a high concentration of radioactive material(the notorious "elephants foot") and sent in a robot since it would mean certain death to approach this source. |

The doc is worth to watch, probably the best made. |

This picture WAS taken by a robot, as no one entered the site post accident (except for the firefighters who fought the fire). The concentration at that point was to clean up... or contain the radioactive fuel wherever it was. Notice the DRY concrete in the picture, because thats what the robot is on top of (concrete was poured in all over the reactor trying to contain the fuel). So this picture shows more facts than not that it was taken by a machine (unless the human was kneeling to get in there). |

Except for the fact that if i'm not mistaken this is underground.. you wouldn't stand a chance. It's pretty clear this photo (and many of the other) were taken by robots. I know many countries have sent in teams since the incident, I doubt highly that a single one of those teams would have forgotten to take their robots with them, you just don't. |

Their work is to look out for the cracks and deterioration of the sarcophagus until a new one can be constructed. Of course they wont go anywhere near the fuel lava, but the upper levels are safe enough for short visits. |

After watching it you'll probably think at least that your job is actually pretty good. Document spoilers: - there is a group of researchers who make trips inside the sarchophagus and in the structures around and below the reactor - they have a strict schedule and plan how they go through their mission: there are places where you can stay for up to half an hour and places where they should run - they used cameras mounted on toy tanks because finer electronics just fail - nobody of the team had died on radiation sicknesses but on heart failures because of very stressful job - however their blood samples contain cells with very broken cromosomes and they have some sicknesses related to radiation - and now what scared me the most: they've actually been climbing on the reactor lid - right in the middle of control rod and fuel dust spaghetti |

One of the pictures on this site has a reference to the International Nuclear Safety site. On that site, in picture 382, there are two scientists who look like they are inside the reactor near to the locations we see on this site. I found text on another site stating that teams of Soviet scientists did venture into the reactor in a search for 'missing' fuel, fuel that had not been accounted for by their other estimates. The concern was for planning the entombment. Again, I am rather desperate to find the BBC Horizon documentary and would love to hear from anyone who could send me a copy or direct me to one. |

The reactor used in Chernobyl was a RBMK type (High Power Channel Reactor), a type invented and used in the former USSR and nowhere else, because it was simply dangerous. For me, the Chernobyl catastrophy is not as a much nuclear catastrophy as it is a symbol of communism and it's destructive ideology. The reactor's lid exploded under high pressure during a form of a crash-test that had to be done before the reactor was even started for the first time, but it did not happen, cause the stupid communists as usually wanted to show their power to their whole nation, and decided to start the reactor's run before the original deadline. |

Smaller doses will hit your immune system, you'll probably die of something else like a massive infection.. I'm wondering if a bone marrow transplant has ever been tried as a cure for doses like that. |

No. Read the whole story behind Chernobyl disaster before you call someone an idiot. The test (some call it experiment) needed a few safety systems to be shut off - unluckily they couldn't be enabled again. RBMK is dangerous by design, due to it's very high positive void coefficient of reactivity - when thw water in the reactor of this type starts to boil, the reaction's speed increases massively. The operators pulled the control rods almost all the way out - this eventually caused the steam explosion - some time after that, carbon caught fire. I saw a sticker on a toilet door in a pub one day: "If you only ever read one book in your life, I highly reccomend: keep four fucking mouth shut." |

The answer is yes, and it worked better than anything else. After the Chernobyl accident, an American Doctor named Robert Gale flew to Moscow and performed transplants on 13 radiation victims. Back in '86, it was a bit of an experimental procedure. With his team of doctors, he saved five. It was an astounding feat, and Gale was awarded the Nobel peace prize as well as the Lenin peace prize. He's an American, and quite a hero to the Russians. Read all about it in the August, 1986 Life magazine. |
